This issue explores the complex material conjunctions between people, materials and meanings through the micro-scales of architecture. From technical detailing to the materiality of living, the issue seeks to identify the potential opportunities held in junctions, processes and moments of material union. Seen as part of a bigger story, these detailed instances may be examined through the conventions of architectural and technical details but may also be pursued through sites or instances of material disorder, conditions of material transformation the flotsam of city tides or the accruing artefacts of lived spaces. - UOUsj#11 / UNSCRIPTED GROUNDS / Hocine Aliouane-Shaw, guest editor / ENSAP Bordeaux, France / Publication June 2026. For more information, please write to the editor: hocine.aliovane@free.fr
This issue explores unscripted grounds, environments left open, undefined, or in a state of suspension, that foster the emergence of new ways of acting, learning, and engaging with space. Often occupying blind spots in architecture and urbanism, these environments invite resourceful practices and grounded approaches that unfold from within rather than being imposed from above. They reveal a potential for renewed spatial agency, ecological repair and, in some cases, give rise to shared forms of stewardship. We invite contributions that draw on grounded experience or critical reflection to reimagine architectural and urban practices from the ground up, through situated engagement with uncertain contexts.
