LATITUDES

AIMS

This workshop aims at exploring the capacity of architecture to related with a specific LATITUDE. Conceiving the time and space as fundamental elements for our life as human beings we, as architects, are asked to think about this relationship and how architecture has been historically designed and will be in future designed according to these needs. We will explore the notion of context and the notion of situated architectural design working on a specific latitude in the north of Sweden. The workshop will involve students from Umeå School of Architecture and from the UOU partners schools. Students are invited to join us at UMA for a collective exhibition / presentation of their works.

METHOD

The workshop will be organized in three main exercises:

  1. Conceptualization of the idea
  2. Critical thinking through common open discussions and exhibition of the work in process
  3. Resolution of the project and final exhibition / festival

We will work with different methods including models, visualization, diagrams and collective drawings. We will rethink the notion of programme and relate with a specific need of a specific community in the north of Sweden.

TECHNIQUE

The workshop will be part of the Studio 3 course at UMA, a vertical studio involving 40 students from the second and third year of our programme. The course will be focused on developing the theme of reuse and reactivation and relation with the existing context, a relevant question of today role of architects. A selection of the works will be part of the issue n.12 of the UOU Scientific Journal and selected works will be presented at the final exhibition of the EURAU 26 conference on the theme: Latitudes. Situated reflections on architectural research.

STRENGTHS

Students will be encouraged to identify emerging themes related to contemporary challenges of our society. By looking at ecological values and not just at simply climatic and physical condition we aim at opening up a reflection on the role of the architects in contemporary times.
